In commercial truck repair and the used-parts market, you'll hear claims like these constantly: "Meritor and Dana differentials are interchangeable." "That Eaton unit will drop right into a Dana axle." "Old Rockwell parts are the same as Meritor parts."
Sometimes there's a legitimate interchange behind a claim like that. Just as often, an important qualification got left out. Two units can look alike, share a spline count, or even physically fit inside the same axle housing without being safe or reliable substitutes for one another.
The brand name is only the starting point. The axle model, assembly number, ratio, mechanical interfaces, and rated capacity matter far more. This guide won't try to list every possible axle and part number combination — instead, it gives you a practical method for evaluating a proposed interchange before you buy.

Define the assembly level you're actually replacing, identify the axle by its model and assembly number (not the truck's year or model), then verify ratio, mounting interfaces, splines, lock system, and rated capacity — in that order. Where any of those can't be confirmed, the honest answer is unverified, not "probably fine."
1. First, Define What You're Replacing
In everyday conversation, "differential" can refer to several different assemblies — and each one has its own compatibility requirements.

For example, an Eaton NoSPIN or Detroit Locker may be engineered specifically for installation in a particular Dana/Spicer axle. That makes it an application-specific product — it does not mean a complete Eaton carrier assembly can replace a Dana carrier.
Before asking whether two components interchange, make sure they're actually the same type of component. A locker that fits a Dana differential case tells you nothing about whether a complete carrier will fit the axle housing.
2. Start With Axle Identification — Not the Truck Model
The same truck model can be built with different axles depending on production date, engine, transmission, duty cycle, and fleet spec. Looking up parts by vehicle year and model alone routinely produces the wrong result. Meritor Axles
For a Meritor axle, record at minimum:
- Axle model
- Carrier part number
- Serial number
- Original axle ratio
- Axle position — forward or rear in a tandem

Dana/Spicer Axles
For a Dana/Spicer commercial drive axle, record the axle model, Dana specification number, carrier assembly serial number, axle ratio, and carrier production or service part number shown on the identification tag. On Dana light axles, the Bill of Material number (BOM) is often the key identifier. It is commonly stamped into an axle tube and may also appear on the carrier in some applications. Eaton Differentials & Lockers
For an Eaton differential or locker, record the complete Eaton product number and check the official application listing and installation notes. A general statement like "fits Dana axles" is not specific enough — Eaton's own listings break fitment down by spline count, ratio range, and sometimes model year.
If the identification tag is missing, look for stamped numbers on the axle tubes, a carrier number, casting numbers, or original vehicle build information. Physical measurement and internal inspection may also be necessary.
If the axle can't be identified confidently, the correct compatibility status is unverified — not "probably interchangeable."
3. Six Things to Check Before Calling It an Interchange
A complete carrier, an unloaded differential case, and a drop-in locker are different products. Some listings describe an Eaton differential designed for a Dana axle simply as "Eaton/Dana compatible." Before relying on that wording, determine exactly what's included: a complete carrier with ring-and-pinion gearing, an unloaded case, a complete locking differential, internal locking components installed in the original case, or a bearing/install kit. Compatibility at one level does not prove compatibility at another.
On a single drive axle, the wrong ratio affects engine speed, performance, and possibly speed-related systems. On tandem drive axles, a mismatch between the forward and rear ratios is much more serious — it can create continuous driveline windup and damage tires, the inter-axle differential, or the gearsets themselves.
Don't rely only on a rounded ratio printed as 3.73, 3.90, or 4.10. When possible, verify the OE gearset number or the actual ring-and-pinion tooth counts. The ring gear and pinion are also a matched set — matching tooth counts or calculated ratios do not make gears from separate sets interchangeable.
When replacing a complete carrier, compare housing opening and locating pilot, mounting depth, bolt count and pattern, input position and offset, sealing surface, and internal housing clearance.
When replacing a case or locker, also compare differential bearing numbers, bearing journal dimensions, ring-gear mounting offset, ring-gear bolt count/diameter/thread, one-piece vs. two-piece case construction, and any gear-ratio break.
A unit can physically enter the housing and still place the ring gear in the wrong position, or require different bearings and shims. Eaton's own application data includes many such qualifications — depending on the product, installation may need special bearings, unique shims, a particular case, or case modification. Spline count is easy to find, which is why it's often treated as the deciding spec. It isn't. Also check spline major and minor diameters, pressure angle and spline form, effective engagement length, axle-shaft diameter, axial position of the side gear, and any difference between the left and right shafts.
Two side gears can share a spline count but differ in profile or engagement length. The shaft may fail to enter at all — or engage only partially, which can let the vehicle run normally at first and then strip the splines or damage the side gear under heavy load.
Differential products may use pneumatic, electric, mechanical, or automatic locking systems. Others, such as the Eaton Detroit Truetrac, use a torque-biasing limited-slip design rather than a true locking mechanism. For a selectable locking differential, verify actuator type and travel, required air pressure or electrical supply, shift collar and fork design, position sensor, indicator and control logic, wiring/air lines/switches, and clearances in both locked and unlocked positions.
A selectable locking unit that fits mechanically may not work with the truck's existing controls. If it needs a different actuator, wiring harness, air circuit, or switch, call it a conditional interchange or engineered conversion — not a direct replacement.
This last check gets skipped most often because it usually doesn't prevent the parts from being assembled. Even if every physical interface matches, confirm gross axle weight rating, maximum input torque, GCW and duty cycle, gear rotation and loaded tooth direction, input yoke/flange spec, lubricant spec and capacity, and any pump or forced-lubrication requirement.
Line-haul, vocational dump, mining, heavy-haul, and off-road applications don't impose the same loads. A lower-capacity assembly doesn't become an acceptable replacement just because its mounting dimensions match — and lubrication requirements can also differ between open, limited-slip, and locking differentials.
4. How to Think About the Meritor–Dana–Eaton Relationship
The three names do not describe one universally interchangeable product family. It breaks down differently depending on the pairing.
Eaton Products Installed in Dana Axles
This is a legitimate and common application. Eaton offers products — including Detroit Locker, NoSPIN, Truetrac, and ELocker units — for specific Dana axle models. Eaton's application guide lists axle model, spline count, ratio range, and special installation requirements for each.
For example, Eaton lists different differential products for various Dana axle configurations, with separate applications above and below particular gear-ratio breaks, and its listings often specify special bearings, case styles, or installation notes. An Eaton product listed this way has been engineered to fit a specified Dana axle. That does not establish general interchangeability between complete Eaton and Dana axle assemblies.
Meritor and Dana Carrier Interchange
There's no useful brand-wide yes-or-no here. A proposed interchange has to be reduced to specific assembly numbers. At minimum, compare:
- Meritor carrier number
- Dana specification number and carrier production/service part number
- Final-drive ratio
- Housing interface
- Input location and rotation
- Axle-shaft specifications
- Differential-lock configuration
- Rated load and torque
Without an official cross-reference, a reputable remanufacturer's documented application, or complete dimensional and engineering verification, the units shouldn't be described as direct replacements.
Rockwell and Meritor Parts
Meritor's product history includes the Rockwell name, so some older assemblies do have recognized successor part numbers or continued applications. But that historical relationship doesn't make every Rockwell-marked component interchangeable with a later Meritor part. The model, generation, carrier number, and official supersession records still control the decision.
5. Use Compatibility Grades Instead of "Universal"
A simple grading system makes interchange claims much clearer than a flat yes or no.

6. The 60-Second Checklist Before You Buy
Before purchasing a used carrier or aftermarket differential, answer these questions:
- Am I replacing a complete axle, carrier, differential case, or locker?
- What is the exact axle model?
- What is the Meritor carrier number, or the applicable Dana specification, BOM, or carrier part number?
- What is the candidate unit's complete product or assembly number?
- Are the final-drive ratios exactly the same?
- Do the housing, bearing, and ring-gear interfaces match?
- Do the axle spline count, dimensions, and engagement length match?
- Are special bearings, shims, flanges, or cases required?
- Is the differential-lock actuator and control system compatible?
- Does the candidate meet the original load, torque, and duty-cycle requirements?
- Is the conclusion backed by a manufacturer catalog, formal cross-reference, or reliable measurements?
If any critical question above remains unanswered, classify the proposed interchange as unverified rather than assuming it will work.
